Summer Research Awards and Applications for Undergraduate Students can be found on the Research and Health Science Education (RHSE) website

Please ensure you have the following information prepared:

  • Research project title that is agreed upon with your supervisor.
  • Previous research experience and/or relevant experience including lab courses.
  • A statement of research interest/academic goals.
  • Any special considerations or circumstances you would like the awards adjudication committee to consider.

If you would like to be considered for the Susan R. George and/or NSERC USRA and/or NSERC Black Student USRA and/or CIHR Black Student USRA, you must indicate this on the RHSE online aplication and this Microsoft Form: 2025 Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Undergraduate Summer Awards 

 

Application deadline: March 4, 2025. 

Please read student eligibility criteria for each award carefully and reach out to supervisors in the Department.  

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is pleased to offer the following categories of summer research awards to undergraduate students on a competitive basis:

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Award (UROP)

Awards will be provided in the following research areas:

  • CA Cancer and Cancer Related Diseases (4 awards)

  • CA-JPM Dr. John P Mitchell Cancer Research Fund (1 award)

  • CH Cardiovascular, Heart (1 award)

  • GM General Medical (Health Research in Any Area) (2 awards)

  • KD Kidney and Kidney Related Diseases (3 awards)

  • RE Respiratory Disease (1 award)

 

Undergraduate Summer Research Studentship (USRS) (1 award)

 

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology 

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is pleased to offer TWO awards, on a competitive basis, to provide UofT and non-UofT undergraduate students who self-identify as a Black and/or Indigenous person and/or economically disempowered person with an opportunity to gain valuable research experience during the summer session.

 

University of Toronto Excellence Awards (UTEA)

  • UTEA Health and Life Sciences (3 awards)
  • UTEA Natural Sciences and Engineering (1 award)

Supervisors must be campus-based, i.e. have their primary budgetary appointment in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine (status-only faculty are no longer eligible) 

A supervisor must be a principal investigator (PI) who holds an active tri-agency grant or has a pending application with one of those agencies at the start date of the UTEA (May 1st) (co-investigators are no longer eligible)

 

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) (1 award)

  • Eligible faculty must hold a tenured, tenure-track or professor emeritus position or a contract position of no less than three continuous years.

  • Eligible faculty must be eligible to hold an NSERC (but do not currently have to have one) and must also have primary appointment and/or funds administered by the Department

  •  Microsoft Form: 2025 Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Undergraduate Summer Awards 

NSERC USRA Black Student Award

There will be a total of 24 NSERC USRA Black Student Awards for the university. These awards are competitive and will be adjudicated by the University of Toronto Research Services Office (RSO).
