Dr. Kurz joined the University of Toronto in September 2024 after more than 18 years on faculty in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary where her research program focused on DNA topoisomerases, DNA damage and repair, and the impact of over-the-counter drugs on cancer chemotherapeutic efficacy. Dr. Kurz’s educational scholarship includes a focus on curriculum design, incorporating both inquiry-based learning and universal design for learning, as well as emerging challenges in academic integrity.

Dr. Kurz, who is cross-appointed to the Human Biology program in the Faculty of Arts and Science, is an award-winning educator, mentor and educational leader, having earned several of the University of Calgary’s top awards, including the McCaig-Killam Teaching Award, the Killam Undergraduate Mentorship award, the University of Calgary Award for Educational Leadership and a University of Calgary Students’ Union Teaching. She served for ten years (2013-2023) as the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Health and Science Education) and Director of the O’Brien Centre for the Bachelor of Health Sciences program, a flagship research-focused undergraduate program that she co-developed at the University of Calgary.
