The Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology is pleased to announce the re-appointment of Dr. Ana Andreazza to the Thomas C. Zachos Chair in Mitochondria Research. The $1 million Thomas C. Zachos Chair in Mitochondrial Research was established by Constantine and Stacy Zachos, who set out to honour their son Thomas, who lives with mitochondrial disease, and have inspired many of their friends to join in supporting this promising fundamental research. Mitochondria are critical energy-generating structures found inside most cells of the body; when they malfunction, this can disrupt major organs.
The Thomas C. Zachos Chair in Mitochondria Research has been essential in advancing the Mitochondrial Innovation Initiative (MITO2i) through a matching fund model that complements the University’s Institutional Strategic Initiatives (ISI). This partnership provides vital financial support, ensuring the long-term sustainability of MITO2i's work in mitochondrial research and its translational applications. We asked Dr. Andreazza to share her thoughts with us:
I am deeply honored to be re-appointed as the Thomas C. Zachos Chair in Mitochondria Research. This role allows me to continue working alongside a family that is deeply committed to transforming mitochondrial medicine and research. Together, we aim to bring mitochondrial health into everyday clinical practice, enhancing the quality of life for so many in need. I look forward to advancing this vital mission and making a lasting impact in the field.
In its four years, MITO2i has made transformative strides, growing to over 600 members and establishing more than 40 partnerships with internal and external sponsors. The initiative has funded 35 graduate scholarships, supported four post-doctoral fellows, and awarded seven innovation grants. With 15 research streams, 138 publications, and over 50 events, MITO2i has become a leader in mitochondrial studies. We look forward to another term of innovation, collaboration, and excellence under Dr. Andreazza’s guidance. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Andreazza on her reappointment!
